This week we have been learning about the value of money and how to use money in every day life. Today we set up shops in our classroom. We had $10.00 to spend and the shopkeepers gave us change.
At the end Our change plus our goods should have added up to $10.00!
Did the contents of your wallet add up to $10.00?
In class this week 3A students have been learning how to tell what time it is.
Last week everyone made their own clocks and created a game using their clocks.
Some of the games were quite complicated and it was fun working collaboratively and using our new understandings about time!
What is your favourite time of the day?
Yesterday Maddy and Eva from 4A came to our classroom to share a maths game that they had developed for a maths project.
They did a fantastic job of explaining the game including a Learning Focus and Success Criteria.
Eva and Maddy brought all of the materials needed apart from the 10 sided dice.
The game involved throwing two die, multiplying them and placing a small cube on the answer – laminated sheet (if it was there!)
3A thought that the game was well thought out and that the girls explained the rules with confidence. They were also very helpful.
This week in Maths we are learning how to measure accurately.
We took our shoes off and ordered them from smallest to largest.
Today we are going to trace our feet and measure the width and length using informal (counters, blocks etc) and formal (centimeters) units.
Was your shoe length smaller, larger or in the middle?
Today we began learning about lines and angles.
An angle is where two lines meet. The angle is the amount of turning between the two lines that meet.
We learnt that parallel lines are the same distance from each other and they never meet.
Perpendicular Lines meet at right angles.
Can you see any angles around home or school?
In Maths we have been learning how to tell the time (to the minute) on analogue and digital clocks.
We made 12 hour “clocks” – we divided our day up according to things that we might do in a 12 hour period.
What is your favorite time of the day?
Well, it feels like we have hit the ground running! We have had a busy week of learning.
It was great to come back to school on Monday after two weeks of holidays. Everyone had big smiles on their faces and we were all happy to see each other again.
In Maths we have been learning about fractions. We know that fractions are a part of a whole. We have been looking at fractions of shapes and fractions of collections of objects.
We made our own fractions walls which are on display in our classroom.
On Friday we made a human fraction wall using 20 different fractions which included 1/4s, 1/3s, 1/6s & 1/8s.
This week we will continue to explore fractions.
What do you know about fractions?
Last week students from 3A enjoyed working in groups to construct cities which reflected some of the Mathematical concepts covered so far this year.
Students used arrays, multiplication, measuring length and area, addition and division (just to name a few!) in their models.
What Maths can you see in these models?
Learning about money has been lots of fun this week!
We made our own lunch order and worked out what we would buy with $10.00.
We played shops with 3B. We had $10.00 to spend and we had to add coins together and work out change. At the end we added our purchases together – spat least one person ended up with more money than they had to begin with!
What did you learn about Australian money?
